Ouija boards are not toys, though they are unfortunately currently marketed as such. These "toys" are actually extremely potent divination tools and should only be used by skilled individuals who understand the risks and are willing to take them.
First off, yes, a person can absolutely contact spirits via the Ouija board. It is definitely an effective and powerful divination instrument. However, the question ought to be: what kind of spirits will you actually contact?
While it is true that cases exist involving people who have channeled valuable information via the Ouija, more often than not the information that comes through is lower-vibration, unenlightened and sometimes downright threatening.

While it is possible to make contact with more enlightened beings via the use of certain divinatory tools, the Ouija, for whatever reason -- and I feel the reason is vibratory in nature and also involves historical stigmatization -- appears to attract spirits who essentially cannot or will not move on. Why would you want to talk with these beings? Why would you want proof or evidence from these sorts of entities? Why would you want to play with that kind of fire?
You shouldn't want to, and in my opinion as a psychic medium, you shouldn't do it at all.
People without developed psychic abilities usually are unable to discern whether an entity coming forward is good or bad / moral or immoral. This makes their use of this board unsafe. Psychic individuals, however, can read and judge energetic vibrations, and all beings (including humans) resonate at a certain vibratory level. Therefore some psychics can effectively use the Ouija as a tool for channeling information, but this is because they typically have more skills, more information and more protection. Even so, however, extreme caution must always be taken.
For the record, and as someone who works as a professional psychic, I do not and would not use the Ouija board.
That being said, if you do not possess developed psychic skills yet still wish to proceed with the Ouija board, do so knowing that it is generally recognized to attract more problems than good into a person's life. Ouija Board Origins

The exact origins of the Ouija Board cannot be traced but there is evidence to suggest they may have arisen from ancient civilizations. Perhaps they are based on the ancient Chinese divination method of fuji? Dating back to 1100BCE fuji involved guiding a stick around a tray filled with sand. The messages spelled out in the container were thought to be communications from the spirit world.

In its early years the Ouija Board was referred to as a Talking Board and looked very different from the boards we recognize these days. These early designs had a pencil fitted to the planchett which was rested upon sheets of blank paper. The participants would ask a question and the planchett would travel across the paper until it had spelt out the messages from the spirits. Over time, the design was modified until the boards had letters, numbers and words fixed upon them.

The modern Ouija Board which we know today dates back to the late 19th Century where they were first sold as novelty items. William Fuld of the Kennard Novelty Company was the first to introduce the Talking Board to the mainstream and in 1901 patented the term 'Ouija Board' to market them. This was the perfect time to introduce these boards to the general public as interest in spiritualism was growing in popularity.

An interesting side-note is that the original Ouija Boards did not have the words "hello" and "goodbye" on them. It was only added by the Victorians who didn't want to anger the spirits with bad manners so demanded a courteous opening and closing to their Ouija sessions!

Fuld claimed the word Ouija was from the Egyptian for 'good luck'. In fact, this is untrue. However, the name can be linked to the words for yes in French and German, "oui" and "ja" respectively. One of the earliest mysteries surrounding the boards can be attributed to the death of Fuld himself. In 1927, whilst attempting to repair a flag mast on the factory roof that produced the boards he fell to his death. The official explanation is that one of the supports gave way however, others believe a more sinister force was at work and something supernatural caused his demise!

The Fuld family eventually sold the trademark 'Ouija Board' to the toy and game manufacturer Parker Brothers in 1966. Parker Brothers still own the trademark to this day. To date, they are estimated to have sold up to 25 million units.

Much of the opposition to using Ouija Boards comes from religions groups with many of them believing the boards carry a threat of demonic possession. Some fundamentalist Christian groups have burnt the boards as they see them as symbols of witchcraft! However, there is much scientific study to suggest Ouija Boards are nothing more than a toy and it is only the conscious/unconscious activities of the participants that is responsible for making the boards 'work'.

So the Ouija Board we know today may have their origins in ancient China. The methods used to use the Boards have changed through time but the debate as to their credibility is still a source of great debate. Perhaps Parker Brothers summed this up perfectly with their marketing slogans: "It's just a game...isn't it?"

The ancient and mysterious Ouija board probably dates back to beyond 1100 BC, when its use was first recorded in China. Over three thousand years later, this legendary device used to communicate with the dead, still remains a potent symbol of our unknown world.

Throughout history man has been obsessed with his mortality, fascinated by what lies beyond this life. The ouija board is probably the most famous tool used for communication with the dead, and it seems to have been around for centuries. In China there are records dating from 1,200 BC, claiming ouija instruments were frequently used in written communications with the dead, while 13th century Mongols were said to use a table and "rapping noises" for the same purpose. In 540 BC the Greek philosopher Pythagoras and his sect held frequent séances or circles at which 'a mystic table, moving on wheels, moved towards signs. Pythagoras and his pupil supposedly interpreted the board's actions to the audience, describing them as revelations from the unseen world. The results were compiled into an "Apocrypha" (meaning "those having been hidden away - a book of uncertain authorship.

Today's ouija board was designed in Baltimore in 1892 by Elija J Bond and William Fuld, when the boards became popular for use in "parlour games". It's a refined version of one invented in 1853 by French spiritualist Monsieur Planchette. The earlier board was a large piece of paper with a two wheeled heartshaped wedge which had a pencil attached to one end. Today's board is inscribed with numbers and letters, and the wedge is now called a "planchette".

The layout of the ouija board varies slightly from country to country. The original and most popular layout places the "yes" at the top of the circle and the "no" at the bottom. The letters are placed in a circle starting with the letter A next to the word yes and continuing around until the letter Z ends up on the other side of the word "yes". The ten numbers from one to zero are placed at the bottom next to the "no". The ouija board usually requires a minimum of two people to operate it. It is very rare that one person has the power to operate the board.

Horrific Stories of The Infamous Ouija Board

Thanks to Parker Brothers(game company), many young people have dabbled in the paranormal
and have experienced frightening results. Remember being a teenager and the mention of the
Ouija board provoked your curiosity. There is not much talk about the Ouija board today, but
I will never forget the stories of sheer terror, my friends shared with me as a result of using the
infamous Ouija board. Stories I have kept to myself, until now are revealed in this creepy
dark article.

I was watching Unexplained Mysteries late one night and the narrator was talking about the
movie, "The Entity". The Entity(1981 horror movie) is a movie about paranormal phenomenon,
where alleged victim Carla Moran(fictional character) was attacked by a number of unseen forces.
The Unexplained Mysteries show delved into what took place in the home of this woman, who
claimed she was being attacked by mad crazed ghosts. Pictures were shown on the show where
spherical orbs were flying around the room and I noticed something in the pictures, that was not
discussed on the show!

Normally, Unexplained Mysteries does not miss a detail as crucial to a case, as this one! I am very
skeptical about these shows, but yet the pictures had some convincing photography. What caught
my eye and you could barely see the image in the bottom of the picture, was a Ouija board!
You actually see a part of the board in the photograph! How in the world could this slip the eyes
of the staff at Unexplained Mysteries! I've studied photographs of so-called paranormal phenomenon
and the ghostly pictures on the show, were the best I have seen yet.

The paranormal investigators were focused on the spherical orbs darting around the room, as the
woman held the deadly Ouija board on her lap. Fortunately, they did show a picture of the woman
with a deadly Ouija board, that proved she was not just laying around in bed and then being attacked
by angry ghosts. This woman was playing with fire and bringing paranormal investigators in to see
some out of this world ghostly activity.

I think it is hilarious for people to say there is violent paranormal activity in their house and overlook
the fact, they were reaching out to the dead through a Ouija board! Even in the movie "The Exorcist",
a young girl is using a Ouija board and her mother never attributes an entity attacking her daughter,
as a result of playing with the Ouija board. The response to such ghostly attacks is cute little innocent
Regan(Exorcist girl) was sensitive to the spirit realm.

The lady who was photographed with orbs flying around the room was looked at, as paranormally
sensitive to the unseen. What makes my head spin with green pea soup vomiting from my earthly
soul, is no one has brought up the possibilities of the Ouija board opening doors to such violent
ghostly chaos. In the above instances of violent insane paranormal activity, no one ever mentions
or associates the Ouija board as being apart of the horrific equation.

I will never forget my relative Lance sharing with me his experience with a Ouija board. He stated that he
got in touch with a spirit, who was in hell and he use to be an Egyptian king. Another friend said he tried
to get rid of his Ouija board and it kept showing up in his bed room. Late one night, he took the Ouija
board and built a roaring fire in his backyard. He was told the only way to be rid of the board, was to burn
it! He threw the Ouija board into the fire and he said blood-curdling screams came forth from the board, as it was burning. Keep in mind, I was told all of these stories in the mid-1980's when most of my
friends were using Ouija boards.

One girl was having a sleep over with a friend and they pulled out the Ouija board for some cheap thrills. The girls asked where this spirit was, they were conversing with and were stunned by the answer! The spirit told the girls it was in the front yard up in a tree with white hair and bright red eyes. The girls almost had a heart attack and they did not look out the window late at night to verify the spirit's statement. This story was well-known throughout my high school back then and I was friends with one of the girls who lived in the house, but never questioned her about this creepy night with the Ouija board. As far as I know, they never touched the ouija board again!

My friend Bryan told me the scariest Ouija board story of them all! Bryan was addicted to the Ouija board and he tried to stop using it by hiding it in his closet. He said a violent force was speaking to him and telling him to bring the board out of the closet. He said this voice tormented him everyday and would not leave him alone. Being threatened by the board he would not speak any further about the subject. I do not know how he got rid of it or how he is doing mentally today. I have heard nothing but creepy and horrific stories about the Ouija board, which makes me believe there may be some truth to these eerie Ouija board stories.

The modern Ouija board developed from the 19th Century with the rise in popularity of mediumship and spiritualism. Spectators would be entertained by mediums who would appear to communicate with the dead by either entering a trance-like state or by using certain specialist apparatus.

- Parapsychologists believe that the collective subconsciousness of the Ouija board participants is what effectively moves the planchette. Participants are tapping into their subconscious and the planchette is moving without there conscious knowledge.

- Sceptics and non believers of course argue that there is no paranormal activity involved and that one or more of the participant purposely moves the planchette.

Good v. Evil:

I do not have black or white answer to whether a Ouija board is a good tool for mediumship or the tool of the Devil as some would claim! I can only judge from past experience and stories told to me by others. Personally, I have never had a bad experience with a Ouija board and I look upon this tool as you would any other.

If someone is killed in a car accident, you would not blame the car and call it evil, you would blame the recklessness of the person driving the car. The same can be said about a Ouija board. Silliness and irresponsibleness will only attract malevolent spirits. Saying that, I am incredibly cautious if using a board and make sure I use cleansing and protection rituals before and during any Ouija sessions. I also work closely with my spirit guide to ensure further protection.

In my seven years of retailing experience, I have never recommended to anyone to use a board as I believe this is a personal choice and inevitably, your responsibility. Only you can decide whether you are fully prepared to safely use a Ouija board and if you have any doubts at all about using the Ouija board you shouldn't.

Ouija Board Dangers

One of the world's greatest paranormal mysteries... how can a board enable communication with spirits?

In 1977 I took part in a Ouija board seance and without doubt witnessed spirit communication, which created a year I would never forget - one because of this, and the other... it was the year of Princess Diana's death here in the UK.

I researched this so called game for many years after my experience and I would like to share with you, 'Ouija board dangers' and what you could be potentially up against, if you decide that the temptation to dabble with one is too great!

BUT FIRST - HOW DOES THE OUIJA BOARD WORK?

The Ouija board was invented in America with a device called, a 'planchette' - meaning 'little plank'.

The board is almost heart shaped and the planchette moves around this. At the time of its making there were two castor's underneath the planchette, which rotated once a pencil was placed at the tip.

Annoyingly for the players, the messages were often difficult to comprehend and were very time consuming. Because of this, a whole host of different types of communication were being developed, but without much success at that time.

E.C Reich - a carpenter from the USA, then developed a lap top wooden board. He carved out the alphabet in a curve around the top of the board and then created another straight line underneath, with the numerals o-9 engraved. Reiche etched the words 'Yes' and 'No' in each bottom corner. He then replaced the pencil with an extra coaster, which gave the board more definition to the bottom of the heart shape. This then acted as the pointer as the planchette moved to each letter. (NB: some boards nowadays have the 'yes' and 'no' at the top)

The plancehtette's ease of movement and communication resulted in a major breakthrough with spiritual contact.

Great potential was envisaged for this product when Reiche then sold his business to two of his friends called, Charles Kennard and William Maupin, who began marketing the Ouija board in 1886.

In 1892 William Fuld took over the business development and subsequently changed the name to 'Ouija Novelty Co'.

The Ouija board took off to such an extent with Fuld (and later his brother's input), that it remained successful for the next 35 years. By 1920 it was believed to have made over £1m profit and was also credited as being William Fuld's invention...a claim Fuld quite rightly denied.

Remarkably, in 1927 it was reported that Fuld committed suicide (aged 57 years old) by jumping off the Baltimore building (where his factory was based). This then gave the Ouija board an even more sinister appeal. However, other accounts stated that Fuld had fallen from the building whilst leaning against a railing, which subsequently gave way and led to his death.

Whatever the reason for Fuld's death, the business was immediately taken over by his children, Catherine and William A. Fuld who continuted to market this phenomenum until 'Parker Bros' took over in 1942.

Spirit communication similar to the Ouija has been used for centuries, even before the time of Christ. Its popularity is almost certainly due to the high and regular success rate with spirit communication.

However, people who use Ouija boards, or conduct séances without protection are ultimately sitting targets for psychic attacks, with a huge risk of attracting dangerous - 'non-human' energies, such as demons. It is believed that a demon's ultimate goal is to free itself from its miserable existence and to enter into ours - through any means possible.

A Ouija board acts like a beacon of light, which reaches astral dimensions - once a game is in progress. This then becomes a portal of access for anything to come 'unintentionally' invited into our existence. Once in, this energy will attach itself to the most vulnerable person playing the game...usually the most naive to the Ouija's capabilities.

The Ouija board is one of the most dangerous occult games to 'play' and has caused many people to encounter horrendous paranormal occurrences. I was lucky enough to escape with just the terrible memory of my experience, which will remain etched in my subliminal and unforgiving conscious for the rest of my life.
