Does the Ghost of a Serial Killer Still Walk the Halls of LaLaurie Mansion in New Orleans?

The three-storied home at 1140 Royal Street (Rue Royale) in the French Quarter is presently for sale for a cool $2.9 million, but for many years it stood empty and ruined. It was only back during 1832 when it was just newly built for its owners, Dr. and Madame LaLaurie that it was as beautifully furnished as it is now.

For two years Delphine LaLaurie, a Creole socialite, hosted lavish soirees that were attended by all the prominent citizens in New Orleans; however all that changed on a spring afternoon on April 10th, 1834 when an old Negress cook set a fire in the kitchen. Neighbors rushed in to save valuables, including the slaves and what they found confirmed their suspicions beyond their worse expectation.

After leaving the kitchen which was located over the carriageway building across the courtyard, volunteer firemen and other neighbors entered the main house in search of other slaves. They finally found them in the attic area in a secret room, more than a dozen poor wretches, tortured, tormented and locked away where their screams could not be heard. Some were chained to a wall emaciated and close to death, a few were strapped to crudely made operating tables, and others squeezed into cages made for dogs. Human body parts were found in buckets.

The fire was extinguished, however the scandal that was ignited by an article published by the local newspaper, the New Orleans Bee telling of the conditions of the slaves and describing Madame LaLaurie as "the demon, in the shape of a woman" swept the city. Many remembered an event only a year ago when Delphine LaLaurie was seen by a neighbor whipping a young female slave, who in a frenzy to escape from her had fallen from a balcony and died. Rumors had it the child was secretly buried that night on the grounds of the home. It was not a difficult story to believe since by then the mistress of the house had a reputation for maltreatment of her slaves, which she justified as keeping them in control. Others wondered if this was Delphine's way of exacting retribution for her mother, Madame Macarty, who was murdered on a Carrollton plantation during a slave uprising. At that time. a year before this incident, in response to reports of her ill treatment of the slaves, a judge ordered for them to be sold at auction and the LaLauries were fined, however relatives bought the slaves and sold them back to their mistress. Those outraged readers most probably wondered how many had been brought back to end up suffering such a horrible fate.

As the story circulated throughout New Orleans, the fury it stirred finally broke loose five days later and infuriated citizens of the Vieux Carre stormed the house and destroyed the interior. The LaLauries barely escaped with their lives and left the city, shortly thereafter setting sail for France, never to be seen again.

The house was not rebuilt until 1837, and even then it already had the reputation for being haunted. Ghostly apparitions, screams, moans and flickering lights finally drove the new owner out within three months of moving in, and he then rented it out to business owners. During the Civil War it was a Union headquarter and the stories of hauntings persisted, especially the sound of chains clanking coming from the old slave quarters. The house went through different incarnations, as a school, private apartments and by the 1920s it was a tenement where one occupant described seeing a man walking around carrying his head on his arm. Another apparition was that of a woman leaning out of a window.

By now the house was reputed to be the most haunted in New Orleans, and even though there were those that insinuated that many of the stories written about Madame LaLaurie and what had transpired on April 10th, 1834 were grossly exaggerated, making her a victim of yellow journalism, it is impossible to discount and explain the remains that workmen found while doing repairs to the house. From under the floorboards human skeletons were dug up, too near the surface to be part of a graveyard, and the bits of fabric and hair still found on the jumbled bones confirmed they belong to Negroes. Even more chilling was the fact that it seemed they were put in the earth during the early part of the 1800s. Some of the skulls had large holes in them, this and the fact that they were not buried in a trench confirmed this was not a mass burial due to an epidemic. Were these other victims of Delphine, secretly buried in shallow graves in the dead of night?

So who does walk the halls of LaLaurie Mansion? Is it Delphine LaLaurie paying penitence for her deeds, or is it her victims reliving their worse moments at her hands? Or maybe it's both, and in that dark upstairs garret that's been sealed away the victims are now allowed to exact their revenge in any way they see fit.

Nibiru & December 2012 - What Are We to Believe?

The world will surely end in December 2012. Or at least, this is the consensus of many disparate groups who believe certain portends are pointing to the inevitable destruction of civilisation in the very near future. Some point to a combination of factors: ancient prophesy; strange events; celestial movements; decadence and un-godliness of modern societies; and turning points in ancient calendars.

Among these, many have worthwhile claims to warrant further examination. For instance, it is largely irrefutable that a significant moment in the cycle of the calendar of the ancient Mayan people of Central America will occur on December 21st 2012.

The Long Count, one of the major cycles of this calendar, will for the first time in over 5,000 years revert to its starting point. The Mayans were particularly superstitious when even the minor cycles of the calendar reached their starting point approximately every 52 years so an event of this seldomness may well warrant some foreboding!

At the other end of the likelihood scale, however, are contentions that a rogue planet, known as Planet Nibiru or alternatively Planet X, is likely to collide or sufficiently interfere with the orbit of Earth in 2012 as to end life as we know it. Having reviewed the available evidence for this, it is difficult not to conclude that this particular theory has benefited from the general sense of fear and dread surrounding 2012, more so than adding significantly to it.

The Planet Nibiru theory purports that a planetary object about four times the size of Earth will come into orbital contact with Earth. While a collision between the two planets would obviously be catastrophic, it would also be sufficient for an object of that size merely to come into Earth's orbital sphere for it to have a gravitational effect that could disrupt life here in many ways we would struggle to recover from. One suggestion is that the Poles on which the Earth's axis rotates would physically shift for the North and South Pole to different locations around Earth, with drastic consequences.

The original proposer of this theory is Nancy Leider, an American woman who claims to have contact with extra-terrestrial a decade ago that led to her receiving information about Planet X, or Planet Nibiru. She told the world to expect this cataclysmic event to occur in 2003. When it did not, her claim was that she had intentionally given a false date to throw some sceptics off the scent of the real date. One would have to conclude however that the lack of a collision in 2003 has only served to weaken the theory, not to mention enrage anyone who took her word for it at the time and gave everything away to charity in anticipation of the big event.

For now, those who express scepticism about this or other such civilisation-ending events will continue to be accused of being part of a conspiracy to cover up the inevitable to avoid widespread panic. Which makes the input of the likes of NASA, who state that no such planet exists or is on its way, one that you will have to decide upon: the sane voice of scientific reason of conspirator-in-chief?!

The Sphinx - A Greek Or Egyptian Creation?

On the plateau of Giza, facing the rising sun, the Great Sphinx statue still sits. Visiting the site it is impossible to be unmoved; the Sphinx is huge; 241 ft long, 20 ft wide, and 66.34. It is one of the oldest AND largest statues in the world, but apart from those measurements, we know very little about it. No-one knows for certain whose face the statue bares, who had it built or why. We do know that the Great Sphinx is so old that the Pharaohs (including Rameses II) regarded it as an incredibly old and sent workers to restore it, as in their time almost all of the ancient statue had disappeared beneath the sands. Beyond that there are no writings to mention it's creation and we don't know it's name. Why do we even call it 'The Sphinx'?

Greek mythology tells of a mythical beast who had the body of a lion and the head of a woman. This beast guarded the town of Thebes, but this is Greek Thebes, not the Egyptian city of the same name. According to legend this beast asked every passing traveller a riddle. "Which creature in the morning goes on four legs, at mid-day on two, and in the evening upon three, and the more legs it has, the weaker it be?" Anyone unable to answer the riddle was immediately strangled by the monster and eaten. According to legend Oedipus escaped death with this answer "Man-who crawls on all fours as a baby, then walks on two feet as an adult, and then walks with a cane in old age." The monster then leaped from the cliff where she lived, to her death. This monster the Greeks called a sphinx, from the Greek word which means 'to strangle' the result is that all such monuments of a mythical beast with the body of a lion, whether Greek Status or Egyptian statues are now called 'sphinx'.

Anyone who has looked at an Egyptian statue of a sphinx may be puzzled - this does not seem like a statue of a monster. Could there be some sort of mistake? There are many similar Egyptian statues showing lion bodied beasts with the heads of other animals (frequently men or rams) such as the great avenue of 900 sphinxes at Thebes in Egypt, but these sphinxes (we don't actually know what they Ancient Egyptians called them) were not monsters. An Egyptian sphinx statue was a guardian, the lions body represented the sun god; And that's not the only difference.

A Greek sphinx statue shows a lions body, a serpents tale and the face of a woman. The lion is seated, her font legs vertical, but her most outstanding feature is the pair of eagles wings stretching out from her shoulders. Egyptian statues depict a prone leonine body and usually have the head of a man or other animal. Most notably they have no wings at all.

It seems strange that this one word could come to represent two such different forms of ancient statue, but the Great Sphinx itself has even greater mysteries.

In 1950 R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz noticed the marks of what he believed was water erosion inside the Sphinx Enclosure. In 1989 a further investigation by geologist, Robert Schoch, revealed that this 'weathering' had been caused by rain, yet the average annual rainfall in the area since 2600 BC (when archaeologists believe the sphinx was built) was only one inch. This has lead a number of authors to state that the sphinx is in fact far older than originally thought and dates from pre-dynastic times, making this Egyptian statue over 5000 years old. While many reputable archaeologists say this cannot be true and give other explanations for the water erosion effect, the fact that no other building on the Giza plateau shows any sign of this weathering leaves the question unanswered.

While it may lack the flamboyance of a winged Greek sphinx statue, the Great Sphinx is magnificent. We may not know it's age or why it was so carefully chiseled from the rock of the Giza Plateau, but we are fortunate to be able to enjoy this ancient statue and it's mysteries, and look forward to the day when they can be fully unraveled.

Nibiru in 2012

Nibiru called the "Planet of the Crossing" is represented in ancient history by a cross and a winged disk reflecting the supreme deity in the Sumerian and Babylonian temples. Nibiru is also the god of 50 names and king of gods.

Planet Nibiru is also known as Marduk and Planet X. It is described by some as supposedly the twelfth member in the solar system's family of planets which includes the 10 planets, the sun, and the moon.

According to Zecharia Sitchin, Nibiru has an orbit around the sun of 3,600 Earth years. To understand Sitchin, he is one of the handfuls of people today who can translate the ancient language of Sumerians, Egyptians and Hebrews along with other modern languages. He has devoted his life on studying ancient civilizations and translating ancient texts, cuneiforms and clay tablets.

The Sumerians, the oldest civilization on earth, wrote into tablets a very detailed map of the galaxy with each planet precisely sized and positioned correctly. Zecharia Sitchin's key ideas are based on the assumption that ancient myths are not myths but historical and scientific texts. According to Sitchin, ancient Sumerian clay tablets reveal that gods from Nibiru arrived on Earth some 450,000 years ago and created humans. These gods are called Anunnaki. Anunnaki means something to the effect of "those of royal blood or "princely offspring" or "those who came from heaven to Earth". The theory is that Anunnaki came to Earth in need of gold to protect their dwindling atmosphere. Exhausted and in need of help in mining the gold they use their genetic knowledge to create the needed Primitive Workers and they created the first homosapien.

Nibiru is a planet that orbits our sun every 3600 years. It got its name from being an elusive planet. It is suggested that current astronomy points to the possibility that Nibiru is a brown dwarf or dark star rather than a planet. This has the implication that our solar system, like the majority in the known universe, is a binary star system; in other words, Earth has two suns with Nibiru being the second and less bright. The first real pictures of Nibiru were photographed shortly after January 26, 1983. The astronomers calculated at that time that Nibiru was over 50 million miles away from us. In 2004 Nibiru was determined to be only 7 million miles away. Confirmation of the twelfth planet Nibiru was photographed in Japan on February 28, 2008. It exists, and it will be on Earth by the end of 2012. Nibiru will appear as two suns in the sky no later than 2011.

Many theorists say that when Nibiru passes Earth on its 3,600 year orbit around the sun, it might bring terrifying consequences. They fear that this will cause earthquakes, tidal waves, severe flooding, food shortages due to climatic conditions, diseases, meteor fire storms, volcanic eruptions and the like. They are afraid that it will result in a great catastrophic infliction and will cause loss of life on Earth. All these theories stemmed up because according to ancient texts when Nibiru came into the Earth's solar system it caused The Great Flood that occurred around 11,000 BC.

When we delve into the past and become aware of our origins, our world and our universe, it seems overwhelming with all its wonders. But time, the eternal eye, will provide more information to us when we need it.

Spirits and Gods - Who Has the Burden of Proof?

Suppose that you and I walk into a room in which there are a bed, a chair, a small table with a vase of flowers on the table. A quick visual and tactile inspection reveals nothing else in the room. We both agree on this. [This could be taken as the 'neutral' position.]

I adopt this 'neutral' position as my philosophy: The room contains nothing but two people, a bed, a chair, a table and a vase of flowers. Affirmation of this premise is consistent with me functioning well (even flourishing and thriving) in the room.

You, on the other hand, agree with me on the stated list of physical things in the room, but you add another unseen, undetectable item, namely, a spirit with whom you claim "interaction." This 'interaction' makes your stay in the room easier and meaningful. It has pragmatic, psychological value for you. But you're unable to show me or others (who might join us in the room) that the spirit really exists. You cannot come up with any objective, neutral evidence to support your belief.

Who has the burden of "proving" his case? Is it the theist who claims that an extraordinary entity exists? (One example of an extraordinary entity is a supernatural being who relates in some ways to humanity and who is the ground for all reality,) Or is it the non-theist (atheist, agnostic, skeptic) who finds that there isn't any clear indication of such an entity?

What is at issue here? The issue concerns the purported existence of an entity whose existence has not been shown to be a public, common reality knowable by all, including disinterested, neutral parties. If the existence of the deity were clear and well-grounded, there would be no issue, and no need for arguments purporting to prove the existence of the deity. Given that we do have a legitimate issue for rational minds, the burden of proof seems to fall on those who claim that a deity in fact exists. But many disagree.

Has anyone ever been able to provide unequivocal, objective evidence clearly supporting the proposition that a deity exists? Isn't the burden of proof is on those who claim there is such evidence? Don't they have to show neutral, objective grounds for belief in a deity?

Where is the neutral position?

Many theists and the believers in religious orthodoxy will deny that they have the burden of proof because they see the neutral position as being neutral between both the existence and non-existence of a deity. Accordingly, they argue that the skeptic has to make a case for nonexistence, in light of the nearly universal belief in deity.

Of course, in a culture in which there is universal, or nearly universal, belief in a deity, the skeptic or non-theist stands out as a non-conformist; he is seen as standing outside the mainstream. In this context, most people might believe that the burden of proof is on the skeptic to justify his drastic non-conformity. On the other hand, those who conform by affirming a deity do not have to prove anything.

But in a pluralistic culture like ours, in which a significant minority do not believe in a deity, and among those who do believe, there are varying concepts of deity and ambiguity regarding the proposition that a deity exists, the burden of proof should not be on the skeptic.

So we have the common view that the skeptic must make a good case for non-existence of deity before the theistic position becomes questionable. Should we give the apologists such an advantage in the "god debate"? I think not.

I will argue for an alternative notion of the neutral position. The key is the naturalistic standpoint: We ordinarily explain events in nature and society without invoking the mysterious, unknowable supernatural realm. Any reference to the supernatural realm is problematic and usually of no real help in explaining matters. [Does this beg the question?]

Is this really a neutral position?

Some apologists claim there is no neutral position. According to them, both the view of belief in a deity and non-belief require certain assumptions. Both positions require certain "faith"; i.e., presumption that a belief system is true.

Contrary to this, the rational skeptic will argue that belief in a questionable entity requires additional assumptions or basic faith, but omission of this belief does not. How would the argument go?
Let us start by admitting that, in order to make sense of our world, people generally start with certain assumptions or presuppositions. Some examples are

• the assumptions that generally the future will resemble the past (what we learned yesterday applies to today, and what we learn today generally will apply to tomorrow);
• that generally our perceptual experience is a good guide to things and happenings in our environment;
• that questionable claims must be supported by empirical evidence or well-grounded reasoning.
• that there is a difference between fact and fiction, common public reality, on the one hand, and fantasy or hallucinations, on the other;
• something like the "Law of the Excluded Middle"; no contradictions allowed: something cannot both be and not be (in the same sense).

There may be more; my list is just to give a flavor of the "faith" of the secular rationalist.

It is reasonable to say that the most ardent defender of religious faith shares these assumptions with the rational skeptic. In order for anyone to operate successfully in the world, he must operate with assumptions (or unstated presuppositions) much like these. Even believers in gods, angels, demons, and miracles do not accept every claim that others make (especially when those claims oppose their basic beliefs); they apply tests of empirical evidence and reason to them, and may even reject them on this basis. And such believers also routinely reject the fantasies of disturbed persons and the hallucinations of drunkards and mentally impaired people. Hence, my claim that even believers in gods and demons use assumptions stated in the third and fourth bullets above.

It is a set of presuppositions like these that could be called the "shared faith" of our culture. But such shared faith does not entail the beliefs of a theistic religion; nor does it entail that our traditional religious beliefs are false. The "shared faith" is neutral between theism and positive atheism (the positive claim that there are no gods whatsoever).

But the naturalism of the rational skeptic does not need any additional assumptions. A world view that omits belief in a deity is an adequate world view. In the same sense the world view of most mature people that omits belief in Santa Claus (as an actual individual) is an adequate world view. By "adequate" here I mean that the set of beliefs are good enough to enable a successful, intelligent, moral existence.

The world view of the rational skeptic is not as non-conformist as our 'Christian' culture suggests. Millions of people in different cultures and historical periods have operated successfully on this basis. The fact that others in theistic, religious cultures find it "impossible" to do the same does not show that a naturalistic world view is not workable; it only shows that under certain cultural, historical conditions, entire cultures have been persuaded that it is unworkable.

2012 - Get Ready For the Main Event of the Year in Our Galaxy

What is the movie 2012 trying to tell us? I think that they are telling us that the end of the world is near and very possible. The makers of this movie are sending us a message and probably are trying for us to understand that with so many future predictions by known prophets and some ancient civilizations that we should pay attention to their messages.

Could this terrible fate fall upon us as the producers are trying to make us believe that such a catastrophe will be upon us in 2012? The producers confirm that they have done an extensive study on the many predictions told by the past prophet, Nostradamus, and the ancient civilization such as the most famous one, The Mayan. The producers of the movie 2012 believe that their message is clear enough for us to begin preparation for such an event.

The movie seems like another action fantasy movie but it might be the only way of communication that this society understands. This might be the only way we can listen; through a movie. We might be able to believe them more than if we read a book or a newspaper telling us the same message. Entertaining us and at the same time sending us a message. Trying to reach us through the media is the future and it tells what type of society we have become.
I think there can be a real message within the actual entertainment of the movie. We can either believe what they are warning us of or completely ignore it. Maybe there is some truth in the message the movie is trying to relay. Should we take it seriously or pass it as another fear monger scare tactic movie.

There is another side to this research and that is the scientist side. Some scientist are saying that there is going to be certain events that can change the world but there is an uncertainty in their message as they cannot for sure tell us what will happen. They know that the planets will align because they see it already getting into position and they know that this has happen before. What they do not know is what happened back then when the planets aligned before.

The scientists are also concerned about the earth axis shifting and again this has happen before but they do not know for certain what can occur. They just know that something will happen like the North Pole becoming the South Pole and visa verse.

With this predicament in not being able to tell us for sure what will happen then should we do nothing about it or should we ignore it. There is also the matter of our government in that they are making their own preparations but not telling its citizens to do the same. Why are they keeping this a secret?

What should we do is the right question. If we do not prepare for this possibility of a doomsday then are we going to regret it and probably lose our lives because of lack of believe. Mostly we do not do anything because of our fear of letting our family and friends think that we are going crazy. Maybe we should leave our pride behind and get to ready to save our family, friends and ourselves.

Yes, maybe I want to believe the producers of the movie 2012 because it really makes sense to me. I have also read many books and seen special programs given in the history channel. There is something that will happen and it is up to each of us individually to make a decision in what course of action we decide to take; nothing or prepare for the unknown.

2012 Doomsday Survival Sanctuaries in North America

There are 9 possible 2012 disaster scenarios predicted by the Sumerian Nibiru Prophecy, Nostradamus's Doomsday Prophecy and others. Fortunately the USA is blessed with an immense land area, much of it in high elevations, so finding a remote safe place with the necessary topography is possible if you know where to look. That's where you'll find your 2012 survival sanctuary.

Here are the best 2012 survival sanctuaries in the continental US in alphabetical order, not order of preference.

The Appalachian Mountains

This area is a good candidate for its immensely thick and solid granite core. While they are not exactly what you'd call remote. They cover a big enough area and are sufficiently rugged for you to be able to get some seclusion for your Family Safe House. The downside is that a lot of other 2012 Survivalists know about the Appalachians too, so finding your own private survival sanctuary with be trickier and possibly quite expensive. If you can, you'd be a lot better off moving right away from the heavy population concentration on the Eastern third of the continental USA and looking for your 2012 survival sanctuary to the west of the Missouri River. So now let's take a look at the other areas worth further investigation.

Northern Arizona

The Colorado Plateau is very high at 5-8,000 feet, and a 200 + miles from Phoenix where most of the population in the State is concentrated. The main thing is look out for here is that you have an aquifer on your land, so you can draw your water from underground.

Land ranges from $200 to $500 per acre for average grade and goes up to $20 - $40K in very high quality areas, which have everything in the 2012 survival sanctuary wish-list.

Arkansas

North Central Arkansas is high enough to be safe, has low population and a good growing season. The cost of living is lower than average and land is inexpensive at $500 - $1000 per acre, and it seems like you can build pretty much what you want without needing a permit.

Colorado

Parts of this state are OK if you can get far enough from other people, also it can get extremely cold.

Idaho

Idaho is as close to perfect as it gets. There are massive areas of forest, great hunting and fishing, and a good growing season in lower areas of the state, but it can get very cold at high elevations. Property isn't expensive.

Montana

At lower elevations west of the Great Divide there are some promising places your family's 2102 survival sanctuary. Population is low, but the growing season is short, there's not much crop diversity and it's cold in winter. Areas around Flathead Lake, Eureka and Kalispell are worth a look.

Oregon

The interior of Oregon looks like a survival paradise until you consider how close it is to the teaming millions living in California. The climate is mild and the growing season long. Eastern Oregon could still be worth considering, if you can find a place that is either very hard to find from the road, or very easy to defend.

South Dakota

The South-West part of the state has good groundwater from the Ogala Aquifer, very low population and microclimates can give a better growing season. The topography also lets you find a well concealed hiding-hole with a good view of unwelcome guests.

Texas

Texas is so big that there are plenty of remote rural areas where you can get out of sight. In the hill country the climate is mild and the growing season is long. The downside is that most of the locals are armed to the teeth and don't take kindly to strangers.

Washington

A lot like Oregon, it has a mild climate and good growing season, and areas where population density is low. There is the California factor too though, but overall definitely worth considering.

Wyoming
