When performing real spells and other magickal work, there is often a need to offer libations to the gods and goddesses of your chosen craft. For these rituals, a chalice is necessary. The Chalice or goblet is a cup, usually made of glass, wood or metals like silver, pewter, stainless steel, copper or gold.
Historically, Chalices were used to hold the sacramental wine in religious ceremonies. During the Roman period, the Chalice (or Calix) was a drinking vessel made from a bowl fixed atop a stand. It was commonly used during banquets. The Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, Anglicans, Lutherans and other Christian denominations use the Chalice for Eucharist or Holy Communion. The Chalices were made from precious metals and decorated with jewels. They are considered sacred and treated with the upmost respect. The Holy Grail is an example of the type of veneration and respect shown to the Chalice.
In Wiccan tradition, Chalices are associated with water and the feminine principle. They represent thel qualities of a woman as the Athame does for the male principle. In fact that Chalice is often used in combination with the Athame in many ceremonies like the Great Rite because they evoke that act of procreation, symbolizing universal creativity. The Chalice may contain wine, whiskey, water, milk, beer or other liquids during feasts and holy days.
The Chalice you choose should be one that you are comfortable with because you need to connect with its energy. You may have more than one Chalice. Some use gold for rituals involving the Sun and silver for the moon.
It is important to consider what type of material you are using in your Chalice because metals like pewter can be dangerous when mixed with wine or alcohol. Wood chalices do not do well holding liquid for long periods of time. You need to find a Chalice that "feels right" to you. You can find Chalices just about anywhere. Online in wiccan or metaphysical stores, flea markets, antique stores and even second hand stores like Goodwill.
