The conspiracy theory surrounding the Holy Grail centers on a secret society sworn to protect a royal bloodline-the bloodline of Jesus of Nazareth: this society is called the Priory of Sion. This society believes Jesus was the son of God, they also believe married his beloved Mary Magdalena creating a royal bloodline through their offspring who married into the French royals.
First scribed in a book titled 'Holy Grail Holy Blood' in 1982 by Michael Baigent, Henry Lincoln, and Richard Leigh this novel set forth in print the conspiracy that has plagued the Roman Catholic Church for centuries. The theory that the church has purposely crushed the truth and done everything in their power to prevent people knowing that there are heirs to the throne of God on Earth thereby unseating the Pope and usurping the Catholic Church's claim of divine leadership.
This conspiracy theory has been made popular by modern books and movies fictionalized to re-create the story behind the Priory's quest to find the living heirs of Jesus Christ. The Priory of Sion is said to believe that the Catholic Church destroyed the original tomb but that the society got to the grave first and absconded with the remains to protect it and that the final resting place of Mary is guarded by their sect in order to keep it safe. Guardians of the tomb became known as the Knights Templar until the church destroyed the powerful group only to twist the origins of the Templar Knights and give it official church meaning.
Beyond that some of the ideals of the Priory of Sion mix the religious with political arenas. While the bloodline was said to be mixed with French royalty, known by the Priory as the Merovingian dynasty the modern day Priory calls for a unity of the European government to create a United States of Europe where the Merovingian bloodline would rule.
Historians believe that the relationship of Jesus and Mary was never mentioned in the Priory of Sion's beliefs. They believe that was the brainchild of the author's of 'The Sacred Enigma' (the French title of the book 'Holy Grail Holy Blood') and that in reality the Priory is the guardian of the treasures of the temple of Jerusalem and created the Templar Knights to protect and keep the treasure from the wrong hands throughout history-thus spawning another popular modern movie.
Critics of the conspiracy theory believe the confusion that allowed such books as 'Holy Grail Holy Blood' is the true royal lineage of Judea, the bloodline of David which the Priory does believe is the true ruling bloodline divined by God. Because Jesus was said to be of the bloodline of David it was easily twisted into his being the patriarch of the protected lineage. Because the Bible outlines the close relationship of Jesus and Mary Magdalena the assertion that they married and created a bloodline is reasonable, but critics believe that and further insistence that the heirs of Jesus mingled with French royalty is speculation at best. The first literary instance of the marriage of Jesus and Mary was in a 1973 book titled 'The Jesus Scroll' by Donovan Joyce. While word of mouth has probably heralded the conspiracy theory far longer, most modern books owe their evolved plotline to that book.
Marina Warner, a historian who criticized the first published 'Holy Grail Holy Blood' stated that there wasn't a real problem with believing that Jesus married Mary and created a royal bloodline. The Catholic Church, however, would disagree. A true bloodline would make the entire religious structure crumble from within and all of the power the church still holds over much of the world's governments and people destroyed. To that end Ms. Warner did end her statement with the problem being in the distortion of facts presented as truth.
Because the Priory of Sion is a secret society who does not publicize their true intent, or even care to announce their actual existence to the world it has hard to uncover the real truth.
