It has been known that there are many theories associated with the 2012 doomsday that originated from the great Mayan calendar system. There's the polar shift. There's the idea of alien attacks. There's the Holy Bible signs. There's an upcoming plague. There's this planetary alignment thing and other stuff. Add to that list is the existence of the so-called Planet Niburu or Planet X 2012 NASA.
This Planet Niburu theory got its roots from the Sumerian myth wherein the Sumerians have said to have discovered a planet that is heading towards the direction of Earth. It is basically going to hit our planet and this was predicted to happen last May of 2003, but just like the Y2K news back in 1999, nothing happened. So all of a sudden, the new date is now December 21, 2012, hence the name, Planet X 2012 NASA.
The Planet X and NASA part was derived from the usual procedure of naming newly-discovered planets and the default name used by NASA is Planet X. However, some folks still refer to that planet as Niburu. When this Planet X collides or even just passes the Earth at some distance, major catastrophic changes will occur according to some.
In other versions, this Planet X 2012 NASA isn't actually a planet but just an asteroid, though it's still aptly named so. The story is quite the same wherein this asteroid/planet will go on a full impact with Earth wiping the entire human race and other living things just like how that asteroid made the dinosaurs extinct 65 million years ago. However, scientists and astronomers especially those behind NASA constantly say that this is highly unlikely. Furthermore, they have stated that they have deployed space equipments and tools that detect huge asteroids that may be heading towards our planet and so far, there's no such citing and no evidence of its existence.
Another version states that it's a star or a brown dwarf that may trigger destructive phenomena even by just passing by. However, the possibility of an impact is still there. Some say that this may be another form of a sun that's actually orbiting past our solar system and that it's time to orbit past us is on the upcoming year 2012. When it does, it would affect most planets including ours, the Earth. As mentioned, natural disasters of epic proportions will take place and ruin everything.

As the year draws nearer, more and more stories have appeared and for some, it just gets really confusing and hard to believe anything to begin with.
