Witchcraft Symbols and What They Represent

If we were to truly dive into the world of witchcraft symbols, we would be here all week. There are literally hundreds of different symbols to represent numerous things. In this article, we will cover a few of the more common symbols just to satisfy any general curiosities you may have. If you want to dive even deeper into this study upon the completion of this article, you are certainly encouraged to do so at that time.

The first image that invariably pops into most people's heads when they think of witchcraft symbols is the pentagram. This is a five-pointed star enclosed in a circle, and represents different things depending on the organization and sects putting them into practice. For example, various forms of paganism will interpret the pentagram's meaning differently than one another... and obviously Satanism will have its own meaning, as well.

You will most commonly see the pentagram being used in rituals, as a symbol of balance and protection. Harmony with your surroundings and safety against various evils will likely be the result of you wearing a pentagram on your person. My first exposure (academic, not personal) to a pentagram was in the Satanic sense, and until I learned the truth, I believed that this particular symbol was an exclusively "evil" demonstration.

Here is something which is a bit unexpected. The cross has actually been a pagan symbol for many centuries, and was being used in the practices of witchcraft long before Christianity came into existence. In paganism, the cross represents fertility, power, and the sun. Knowledge and understanding are represented by the vertical bar, while the horizontal bar represents our physical bodies.

The third symbol we will go over is what is known as the triple goddess, which is a very cool-looking, intertwined circle. In reality, the image is that of two crescent moons at the ends, both facing outward, and a circle between them. This particular symbol is literally the representation of the mother, the crone, and the maiden, which can all be broken down into further meaning and representation.

* The Mother - sexuality, stability, fulfillment, fertility, and nurturing

* The Crone - endings, death, and wisdom

* The Maiden - expansion, inception, enchantment, and new beginnings

It is really quite a beautiful symbol which is said to ultimately represent three (1st quarter, 2nd quarter, and full moon) of the four phases of our moon. When you really get into the study of this, as well as the other two witchcraft symbols discussed in this article, you will likely find it very stimulating, moving, and refreshing. There is so much light to be enjoyed via the symbology of ancient and modern paganism.

There are literally hundreds of other powerful and beautiful witchcraft symbols to explore and learn about. I hope you have found this to be both informative and enlightening.
